Katherine Sykes
Consultant, NED, Trustee - strategic communications - reputation management - crisis management - health - FMCG, Marland Sykes Communications
I love a challenge and to achieve new things. I am a Chartered PR Practitioner, CIPR Fellow, lawyer, accredited mediator and qualified project manager. I offer an unusual skillset; my practice area combines strategic communications, politics, policy and the law. I have particular expertise in handling complex and sensitive issues. I'm a natural problem-solver: I combine analysis, logic and creativity in my approach to issues. I like to break new ground if possible.
After many years of working for other people, I now work for myself. My communications management consultancy delivers board and senior level counsel to FTSE 100 companies, membership organisations and other clients. My work involves all aspects of the communications and external/public affairs mix, including managing reputation, issues, risk and crises; policy development; developing multichannel campaigns; PR, creating content and narrative; enhancing brand awareness; engaging and managing stakeholders; media relations; managing and supporting change and transformation. I am an experienced leader and have operated budgets of up to £2million.
I've worked in the consumer and pharmaceutical product sectors as both a product litigation/regulation lawyer and as a senior communications/public affairs adviser. I currently work across healthcare, health and nutrition, food and drink, consumer brands, FMCG, medical and pharmaceutical products, the NHS, professional services, charities, the arts and heritage.
I believe that what we give back to our communities is a large part of who we are and I have spent much of my career actively engaged in voluntary roles. I am co-Chair of CIPR's Crisis Communications Network; a Past Master (2017-18) of the City of London Company of Public Relations Practitioners, the PR and communications industry's livery company; formerly a Director and Trustee of leading addiction charity Action on Addiction; and was previously Vice-Chairman of a campaigning Conservative association.
