Steve's professional bio / interests

Steve Thornton is a retired Metropolitan Police Officer, having completed 30+ years; and has been working as a Civilian Senior Firearms Instructor for the last 5 years. Having experienced many life changing and traumatic incidents over his long and varied career, in London and Manchester, Lobby is now using his experiences to create Peer Support network, and offer training in Mental Health First Aid for police officers, emergency workers and other organisations. Lobby is a qualified TRiM Manager (Trauma Risk Management), a Post Incident Support Program Selected Instructor, a Welfare Coach for the Police Firearms Officers Association, an Ambassador for Police Care UK, and a Founder member of the National Prevention of Police Suicides Group. Lobby is a proactive and forthright Wellbeing Champion, working tirelessly on behalf of colleagues within the Emergency services families, and other organisations. “My passion is the wellbeing of my colleagues; serving and retired as well as the families behind them who are often overlooked when it comes to welfare support.” Lobby set up Trojan Wellbeing in 2020 as a result of ongoing work supporting both colleagues and their families experiencing difficulties. In recent years there is an ever-growing need for Mental Health First Aid training to allow colleagues to recognize symptoms; understand how to support as well as learning about how to signpost those seeking help. Physical First Aid training is mandatory for all Police Officers as well as in many other workplaces; however, most will agree that Mental Health First Aid skills are increasingly vital within all organizations; as life’s challenges and experiences are increasingly affecting the working life of staff at all levels. Trojan Wellbeing aims to provide MHFA trained individuals throughout the country, learn how to proactively spot early warning signs and have the confidence to start a conversation with colleagues who appear to be struggling. In time, this will create a wide-reaching peer support network who willingly offer help and can signpost people to get professional assistance where appropriate.
