Alessandra Fassio
Senior Data Ethicist, Ministry of Justice
Alessandra‘s professional bio / interests
Hello! My name is Alex 😊
I am a former philosopher with an interest in the intersections between data, society and the law. I completed my MA (Hons) & MSc in Philosophy at the University of Edinburgh, focusing specifically on issues in the field of data/AI/tech ethics.
I am interested in how we can harness data for social good both in the right way (adhering to compliance) and for the right reasons (ethically, with people’s rights and interests at the core).
I have experience in helping organisations to design and implement practical data ethics frameworks that ensure data is used responsibly and ethically for social benefit. My goal is to help them move from ethical principles to ethical practices.
I am currently the MoJ’s first (and only!) Senior Data Ethicist, where I am responsible for ensuring gold standard in our handling and usage of data. I am currently working on the development of an ethical framework specific to the justice system.
Previous projects include the Data for Children Collaborative with UNICEF’s Responsible Innovation Framework and the Scottish Government’s Data & Intelligence Network Ethical Framework.
I am also the Community Co-Lead for the Women in AI UK Scotland chapter.
I’d like help with…
I’m looking to connect with likeminded people who are keen to promote ethical, fair and inclusive practices in the data and technology space.
An interesting, or unusual fact(s) about me…
