I am a Professor of Computer Vision and AI; co-director of intelligent visual computing research centre; and leading the visualisation theme of the Data and Complex Systems Research Centre. I am the PI of an on-going EPSRC project (Trustworthy Robotics and Autonomous System for Casualty Triage) linking national security and defence and have been PI of many projects on developing multimodal AI and intelligent systems. My interest is data-driven automation and personalisation. It focuses on developing computational models for machines to perform tasks commonly associated with human intellect and capability underpinning social, legal, and ethical issues. Such models consist of iterative, self-learning methods, which discover evolving relationships/patterns within data. Given the large and complex forensic data, finding hidden relationships and/or patterns within it will be vital to provide detailed analysis and interpretation of relevant materials and data in criminal and non-criminal investigations, and court proceedings.

The power of data-driven AI for justice system’s stakeholders and crime scene to courtroom are clear and wide-ranging. However, a detailed risk assessment is required to understand and manage their risks to enhance trust in safe and reliable operation.
