One critical moment happened right at the beginning of my journey. In the final year of my Computer Studies degree, after my IT placement year with IBM. The expectation was to get the dream job, an IT graduate job with IBM after my final year. However, there was a recession in 1991, the year I graduated and most companies, including IBM, were not taking on graduates. Fortunately, the topic of my final year dissertation was the core business for a startup software house - a perfect match. Working for this startup took me onto roles via recommendations at Whitbread, Bull Information Systems and Visa. This experience (over 30 years ago!) has taught me to truly believe that everything happens for a reason and that the right opportunities will present themselves - we just have to be able to accept what happens and recognise and seize opportunities. It has also given me the confidence to trust and believe in timing.
